Guest article by Helen SmithReal Seniors over age 75 are less likely to be Silver Surfers than baby boomers who used computers in their jobs.

The number of adults over 60 using the Internet and related devices is continuing to grow, and according to a Pew Research survey, over half of all seniors now use the Internet and have cell phones.

This might lead to us to conclude that seniors are “silver surfers,” ready to embrace tech developments as they arise, and turning to the Internet for everything from their shopping and deliveries to their dating needs. In reality, however, we have a long way to go before this is the case. [See Tech Adoption by Real Seniors, because there’s a big gap between them and boomers?]

Technology has been evolving at such a fast rate that keeping up can feel overwhelming, and this is particularly true for seniors [the real seniors]. They often aren’t nearly as excited about new gadgets and gizmos as their younger and more tech-savvy relatives are.

Technology, however, can be a huge benefit to seniors and help them live happier and more enriching lives. So whether you’re a tech wizard or just interested in making life a bit easier, here are the top innovations that all seniors should have:

A Tablet or iPad

Unlike desktop or laptop computers, tablets are much more portable, meaning it’s easy to carry with you wherever you need it – to the kitchen table, sofa, bed, or patio. With their easy-to-use touch screens and myriad of apps available, tablet technology also tends to be more intuitive, which suits seniors who may not have confronted online technology before. What’s more, you can change your font size with just a swipe of your finger: ideal for aging eyesight. [See An iPad for All Ages.]

There are many ways in which owning a tablet can have a positive impact on the lives of seniors: Apps designed for brain training and apps that promote and track health and nutrition are all ideal for ensuring seniors to stay healthy, whilst the ability to view photographs and read emails on the go can help to promote a sense of family and community involvement.

18% of seniors live alone, and 43% say they feel lonely on a regular basis. That loneliness can contribute to poor health. A study by the University of California found that lonely seniors are more likely to experience a rapid health decline and premature death than those who don’t report loneliness. The iPad can help them by combating loneliness, particularly when families live far apart. That’s because Facetime video conferencing is built-in, and conversations with loved ones are just a few clicks away.

A FitBit

Maintaining good health is vital among seniors, particularly if they wish to continue live independently for as long as possible. And regular exercise, with good nutrition and sleep, is key to maintaining good health. Keeping bones supple and muscles strong can help prevent serious injury if a slip or fall occurs, and according to the National Institute of Health, making exercise and physical activity a regular part of your life can improve your health, especially if you have chronic health problems, but it also helps to keep many of the chronic health problems at bay. A Fitbit is a handy little piece of technology for encouraging active living and enabling you to keep track of your physical activity and sleep. As a simple device to wear, a Fitbit can give needed motivation to stay active.

An Emergency Alert System

Perhaps the best technology for seniors living alone is an emergency alert system. It’s a clever device that goes with you and uses GPS technology to pinpoint your location and send for help in an emergency or when you press it. It gives seniors reassurance when they’re alone at night.

More than 33% of accidents and falls among people over age 65 occur at home, and with the increasing numbers of seniors living alone, an emergency alert system provides a safety net – both for them and their loved ones. There’s a wide variety of systems available, meaning there’s one to suit every need. Shop around and find the one that’s perfect for you or your senior.
